 Dentist Fear:
Managed

Are you or someone you know terrified to go to the dentist? If so, untreated dental issues can get worse and eventually require more painful remedies.

Unchecked dental issues can even result in heart disease. If your fear is keeping you from caring for your teeth, the first step is to look for a ‘gentle’ dentist or one who focuses on sedation or treating anxious patients.

  • Specialized lasers: Some dentists now offer a laser ‘drill’ that doesn’t make the scary whine, and you may not even need anesthetic administered. Certain light-based lasers can also reshape gums or treat periodontal disease, also making post-operative pain minimal.

  • Advanced anesthesia delivery: Instead of a syringe, dentists can control how much and how numbing agents are delivered guided by a computer. Buffered anesthetics can reduce the burn of the shot and make it less painful.

  • Sedation/relaxation: Nitrous oxide or ‘laughing gas’ is one of the more common ways to help you relax before a procedure. It wears off quickly and you don’t have to wait to drive or eat afterward. IV sedation or general anesthesia are other options that you can ask about if you’re very anxious, or if you’re having dental surgery that is more likely what will be used.

  • Diagnodent – Sound pulse and laser are used to detect cavities earlier than other methods.  The early detection allows for immediate treatment, preserving natural, healthy tooth structure and avoiding unnecessary additional dental visits.

Bring your headphones and listen to calming music, or try relaxation techniques like deep breathing– some dentists are even offering virtual reality goggles to transport you somewhere away from the dentist chair.

Word of the Month…

Studies have shown your income and wealth are directly related to the size and depth of your vocabulary. Here is this month’s word, so you can impress your friends (and maybe even fatten your wallet!)…

Algorithm (al-gu-ri-thum) noun

Meaning: A set of rules for a program or app, to accomplish a task

Sample Sentence: The algorithm for my car’s GPS determines the fastest and easiest routes.

Tuck In Your Garden

As temperatures drop, gardens and flower beds need some care to help them overwinter healthily.
1. Mulch. After beds are cleared and plants trimmed back, add organic mulch. Like a warm blanket, mulch keeps the soil healthy and nutrients in place. 2. Move pots into warmer and protected areas. 3. Cut the lawn and trim back any plants that need it.
4. Dispose of any diseased or moldy plants.

Quick Laptop Lock

Have you ever walked away from your computer at the coffeeshop just for a second? You should always lock your laptop before stepping away. Luckily, Windows and Mac both allow you to do that with a quick key command.

Windows: Press the Windows key and the letter L at the same time.

Mac: Press CTRL, CMD, and the letter Q.

Holiday Baggage

One of the most stressful times to travel is, of course, when everyone else is also traveling – namely, the holidays. And keeping track of your STUFF while traveling is part of the stress. Keep these tips in mind before you hit the friendly skies:

  • Use the 3-3-3 rule before you start packing – 3 bottoms, 3 tops, and 3 shoes or layering pieces that ALL coordinate. The lighter you pack the less you have to lug around airports/bus stations/cities. You get a surprising number of unique outfits for every day of your trip with this method.
  • Take photos of the items in your luggage, and the outside of your bag as well in case of loss.
  • Track your luggage with an AirTag (Apple devices) or Tile (for Android). At least if it gets lost, you know where. Tuck it into a zippered pocket or even inside the lining in case the bag pops open.
  • Remove any old tags or labels from previous travel to prevent accidental scans to somewhere you aren’t going.
  • Carry essentials with you in your carry-on, in case your checked bag is lost. Have a change of clothes, small toiletries, valuables, and medications with you.

Home Quarterly Preventative Maintenance

You can save yourself time and money when you check your home for issues regularly. Check these items four times a year to make sure problems that arise are caught early:

1. Inspect your hot water heater for cracks, leaks or rust. On your 4th check of the year, it’s a good idea to drain the heater to prevent mineral buildup.

2. Check all extension cords in your home for fraying, damage or bent plugs. Replace any with issues to avoid fire danger.

3. Check and clean dryer lint screens, ducts, and the filter in your washing machine.

4. Look at caulking around tubs and sinks. Clean any dark spots, or remove and re-caulk if you see gaps or spots that don’t turn white after cleaning.

5. Inspect windows and doors for any damage or leaks.

Make Fresh Last

Do your fruits and veggies brown in what seems like record time? Try these tips to maximize their lifespan in your kitchen.
Keep them in the dark. Hard squashes, potatoes, onions, garlic and watermelon should stay cool and dark.

Countertop sitters. peaches, citrus fruits, tomatoes and bananas should be stored away from other fruits, heat, and moisture. You can move the citrus and peaches to the crisper for longer storage.
Keep them cool. You can store these in mesh or plastic bags with holes poked in them in the produce drawer: apples, pears, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, corn, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower.

Radio Websites

Do you like to listen to the radio at work or in the car? Try streaming these interesting websites.

Saving Money On Gas

Are you feeling the pinch at the gas pumps?  Prices just keep climbing, so it’s a good time to look at some of the options that can help you save money and reduce that big expense every time you fill up.

  • Drive smooth. Stepping hard and fast on the gas pedal wastes fuel, while a slow smooth acceleration helps your car be more efficient. In the same way, slamming on your brakes is inefficient. Maintain speed, and take your foot off the pedal to slow down ahead of time. Speeding can also reduce your gas mileage by a lot – especially at highway speeds or above.

  • Reduce drag. Removing roof or bike racks can reduce fuel consumption, and driving with the windows up also makes your car more aerodynamic and uses less fuel.

  • Take advantage of fuel rewards programs. Grocery stores often give you points towards gas discounts when you shop with them, and gas stations may offer direct discounts when you sign up for their free programs.

  • Check out a gas app to help find the lowest prices in the area. Try GasBuddy.com or iExitapp.com.

  • Keep your tires at the correct inflation level. The proper psi will be listed on a label in your car door, or your car’s owner’s manual.

  • Use a membership club for gas. Costco, Sam’s Club, and others often have prices 5 to 25 cents lower than average. You might have to wait in line but make sure to turn your car off in line so you don’t waste as much as you save!

  • Don’t idle when you can help it. Many new cars use auto-shutoff at lights or stops, and leaving that setting on can use up to 25 percent less fuel than when it’s turned off.

  • Use a lower grade fuel. Unless your car specifically requires premium, you can save by using regular gas and AAA research says it won’t affect performance.

Real Estate Corner…

Q: How do I set the right price to sell my home?

A: Like many home sellers, you might have a price in mind that is too high. You need the knowledge of a REALTOR® to give you a more realistic opinion. Here’s what you should do:

  • Ask your REALTOR® for a “total market overview.” What’s happening in general in the economy and the real estate market?
  • Get the facts for your neighborhood. What homes have or haven’t sold in the last 6-12 months, and did the sales include short sales or foreclosures?
  • Work with your REALTOR® to set the right price from the start.  If you start too high, you may keep buyers away. If you lower your price in increments, it may be too late. Timing is key and buyers may already have purchased another home.
